South Jordan • Bingham left-hander Harley Yazzie has spent the past two years grinding out innings and frustrating opponents.

Tuesday was no different, as the senior scattered seven hits and stranded nine Fremont baserunners in a 5-0 complete-game victory in the first round of the Class 5A baseball playoffs.

Yazzie needed 79 pitches and struck out three batters. But he worked out of jams in the second, fifth and seventh innings to keep the Miners (17-9) in the winner's bracket.

"I just grind it out," Yazzie said. "It's my fault for letting them on base. I know how to grind it out. I feel like other teams come out strong, and I just take it easy. Then in the third, fourth, fifth [innings], I just start bringing it."

A hit batter, walk and single loaded the bases for Fremont in the second inning with one out. Yazzie induced flyouts to the next two batters to get out of trouble.

Fremont (14-12), the third-place team from Region 1, put the first two batters on in the fifth, but didn't hit the ball out of the infield the rest of the inning. The Silverwolves stranded two more runners in the seventh.

"He's a really good competitor," Bingham coach Joel Sato said. "When he gets in situations like that, maybe he has a little better focus. Maybe he competes a little bit better. He doesn't let the extra stuff get to him."

The Miners gave Yazzie a 1-0 cushion in the first inning, then broke it open in the third inning, when they sent eight batters to the plate.

Sean Keating hit a two-run home run to right field and Tanner Burr added a two-run single to cap the four-run rally off Fremont starter Jestin Schickel. The sophomore right-hander struck out three in six innings.

The Miners advance to play Davis (19-5) in Tuesday's second round. Fremont will meet defending champion Pleasant Grove in the loser's bracket. —
