Chicago • Christian Pulisic, a 17-year-old midfielder who has scored twice for Borussia Dortmund in the past month, was among 40 players selected by U.S. coach Jurgen Klinsmann for his preliminary Copa America roster.

Matt Miazga, a 20-year-old defender who made his Chelsea debut on April 2, also was included Sunday along with Jordan Morris, a 21-year-old forward who left Stanford in the middle of his junior year to sign with the Seattle Sounders, and 20-year-old goalkeeper Ethan Horvath, who started for the U.S. team that failed to qualify for this year's Olympics.

Nottingham Forest defender Eric Lichaj also was on the roster, and Orlando midfielder/defender Brek Shea was not.

Klinsmann must trim the list to his final 23 by May 20. The U.S. can make changes because of injuries up until a day before its opener on June 3.

The U.S. starts training May 16 in Miami and has exhibitions May 22 at Puerto Rico, against Ecuador four days later at Frisco, Texas, and versus Bolivia on May 28 at Kansas City, Kansas.

The American open the tournament against Colombia at Santa Clara, California, play Costa Rica four days later at Chicago and complete the first round June 11 against Paraguay at Philadelphia.
