In a wide open game, two of the best teams from Region 2 were unable to decide a winner as Viewmont and Layton played to a 1-1 draw.

The Lancers had the majority of possession throughout, finishing with 13 shots and nine corner kicks, but couldn't get a game-winner in the net.

"We just got to finish the opportunities that we did have," Layton coach Rick Talamantez said. "I think we played well … but we had ample opportunities to score. To create that many opportunities and not put them away, it's disappointing."

The Lancers did eventually break the scoring drought in the 67th minute for the opening goal from forward Innocent Twishime, who slotted a perfectly weighted ball past the outstretched arm of Viewmont goalkeeper Tyler Trump.

The host Vikings were unfazed and relied on their counterattacking ability to get back in the game. Thanks to an outside run from teammate Drake Cook, Viewmont senior Jack Fox was left alone 20 yards from the goal as he rocketed a shot inside the far post in the 72nd minute.

Both teams continued to produce chances in the waning minutes of the second half and into the overtime periods, but no winner emerged.

Viewmont coach Spencer Keddington was disappointed, but optimistic after his team's performance following a 2-1 loss to West earlier in the week.

"Our effort was a lot better than Tuesday," Keddington said. "We played really well, unlucky to give up that goal, but Layton is a good team and the finishes will come with time. If we continue to play like that, we can win every game we're in."

With the draw both Layton (4-1-1) and Viewmont (4-2-2) remain second and third in the Region 2 standings respectively, trailing Davis (5-1-1) at the top.

This sets up first vs. second scenario next week as Layton takes on rival Davis in a game that could determine the Region 2 champ.

"We need to win that game for sure," Twishime said. "It's going to be a crazy game with our rival. It's just going to be about who has the most heart and who wants to win that game more."
