Real Salt Lake broke a nearly 450 minute scoring drought at Sporting Park Saturday night to beat Sporting Kansas City 2-1.

The goal came in the 29th minute from a Joao Plata free kick that set up defender Justen Glad on the far post to knock it in with a low strike.

It was Plata's third assist in six games so far this season and the first MLS goal of Glad's career.

RSL nearly added a second in the 57th minute from forward Yura Movsisyan, who began his career with the now defunct Kansas City Wizards, motored solo into the box and rifled a shot that ricocheted off the crossbar.

Midfielder Luke Mulholland assured RSL's victory in the 79th minute, hitting the back of the net from distance after a ball cleared from the box fell directly into his path.

Diego Rubio got one back for Sporting KC in stoppage time after a foul that appeared to be just outside the box earned him a penalty from the referee. Benny Feilhaber took the kick, slotting it past RSL goalkeeper Jeff Attinella in the right corner in the 94th minute.

Despite missing Nick Rimando and Jamison Olave, RSL held the Sporting KC attack in check for most of the evening, allowing only nine shots on goal and handing the home team its first loss of the season.
