Tempe, Ariz. • Sophomore pitcher Jayson Rose struck out eight batters and walked three to lead the Utes to a 3-1 victory against Pac-12 rivals Arizona State.

Utah got runs from Rose, Dalton Carroll, and DeShawn Keirsey Jr. and improved to 7-12 overall and 3-1 in the conference.

Senior Kevin Marruffo had three hits and a RBI for Utah.

No. 23 BYU 4, Loyola Marymount 1 • In Provo, Michael Rucker pitched a complete game to lead the Cougars over Loyola Marymount.

Rucker recorded seven strikeouts for BYU (19-2, 3-1 West Coast Conference) and Keaton Kringlen logged two hits and the game-winning RBI. Brennan Lund added one RBI.

Softball

No. 18 Arizona 3, Utah 1 • In Tucson, Ariz., Wildcats' pitcher Danielle O'Toole struck out four Utes in Utah's loss to Arizona.

Hannah Flippen hit her fourth homer in three games for Utah (21-10, 3-1 Pac-12) and pitcher Miranda Viramontes allowed two hits and struck out a career-high eight batters in six innings.

Utah State 7, New Mexico 4 • The Aggies scored five runs in the fifth inning on their way to beating New Mexico in their Mountain West opener. Utah State (13-11, 1-1 MW) pitcher Noelle Johnson allowed two hits and struck out three batters.
