Carson, Calif. • Gyasi Zardes scored two goals early in the second half, and the Los Angeles Galaxy beat the 10-man San Jose Earthquakes 3-1 in the 2016 opener of the California Clasico rivalry on Saturday night.

Jelle Van Damme headed it down across the front of the goal and Zardes finished with a toe punch in the 56th minute. Zardes doubled the lead six minutes later with an opportunistic stab at Kip Colvey's errant clearance attempt.

Robbie Keane capped the scoring with a penalty kick for the Galaxy (2-1-0) in the 91st minute.

The Earthquakes (2-1-0) went down a man in the third minute of first-half stoppage time when Simon Dawkins was sent off for a lunging scissor tackle on Sebastian Lletget.

Red Bulls 4, Dynnamo 3 • In Harrison, N.J., Felipe scored from the top of the box in the 77th minute to tie the game and tallied on a free kick in the 83rd to give New York Red a stunning victory over Houston.

Sacha Kljestan and Mike Grella also scored as the defending MLS Supporters' Shield winners avoided their first 0-3 start since 1998, when the team was known as the MetroStars.

Will Bruin scored two first-half goals for the potent Dynamo, while Brazilian midfielder Alex added the other in the 65th minute to give Houston a 3-2 lead.

Fire 0, Crew 0 • In Bridgeview, Ill., Matt Lampson had four saves, including a diving stop in the 68th minute, to help Chicago play Columbus to a draw.

Both teams came up empty after some early opportunities. The Fire (0-1-1) had six corners in the first 10 minutes and Columbus had a pair of shots blocked, a couple of offside calls and Frederico Higuain came away empty handed on two early shots — the first of which was saved by Lampson in the 11th.

FC Dallas 2, Impact 0 • In Frisco, Texas, Mauro Diaz opened the scoring in the 79th minute, Maximiliano Urruti added a fast-break finish in the 87th and FC Dallas beat Montreal. —
