Taylorsville • Despite being a No. 1 seed after capturing the Class 4A Region 6 title, Skyline had a worse record than fourth-seeded Bonneville. Add that the Lakers won the first meeting this season, and it was a popular upset pick.

So much for that. Skyline sleepwalked to a 60-44 win at Salt Lake Community College on Monday afternoon, never trailing after knocking down an early barrage of 3-pointers.

"I thought we would be nervous coming in as a young team, like no one has played in the state tournament before," said Skyline's Hannah Anderl. "We're all new to this. I was really surprised and happy with about how our team came out."

Skyline (14-10) finished with eight triples, seven of which were in the first 16 minutes. Anderl (10 points) was one of three Eagles to connect on two shots from beyond the arc, joining Lexi Papastamos (six points) and Barrett Jessop (eight points). Madison Grange led Skyline with 11 points, while Sarah Trela-Hoskins added nine points.

Skyline has won seven of eight games after staring the season 0-6.

"That's the team I expect every game," said Skyline coach Lynette Schroeder. "I was happy that they came ready to play today."

Bonneville (13-10) topped the Eagles, 74-71, in late December, adding to the extra motivation to take care of business on Monday.

"We won region," Anderl said. "We were feeling pretty good about that, and we lost to them earlier to this year, so I think we really came out wanting to beat them."

Added Schroeder: "As long as we learned from our loss, it didn't matter at all. I feel like we have learned from every loss, and those losses have really put us to where we are today.

The Eagles jumped out to an early 10-2 lead and avoided complacency as the advantage expanded as they allowed Sam Filiaga (21 points) and Hannah Shore (18 points) to score, but clamped down on the rest of the Lakers. No other player scored more than two points for Bonneville.

"That's the main thing we focus on, just playing the game, every possession, and not worrying what the scoreboard says," Schroeder said.
