Now that they're on a roll, Utah's sixth-ranked gymnastics team is determined to stay on it.

The Utes, who host Washington on Saturday at 7 p.m., have reached the satisfying point in the season where they feel they've made the most of necessary changes. Despite a young team and the loss of one of its expected leaders, the Utes are in good shape.

"We feel like we have got the gymnastics this team needs that will work to get to regionals and nationals with a chance at getting into the Super Six," Utah coach Megan Marsden said.

The team is young, but the Utes are becoming very consistent, hitting 114 of 120 routines this season, including 24 for 24 in the rowdy atmosphere at UCLA last week.

Continuing that consistency is the first priority, Marsden said.

"We have to be careful we don't push them past their envelope where we are jumping ahead in upgrades but we don't see that consistency," Marsden said.

Her biggest area of concern remains the balance beam. The Utes have been solid on the event the past two weeks and were unfazed by the pressure situation at UCLA — finishing the meet on the beam.

However, Marsden said there is still a difference between the way the Utes practice and compete when it comes to that event.

"We are getting closer, we just aren't quite there," she said. "We just need to get them to a point where the same six from start to finish land everything well. They do it in training, so we know it's doable."

That the Utes can focus on such details now halfway through the season is a sign of their confidence.

They seem to have their floor issues worked out, have overcome as best they can the loss of Kari Lee to an Achilles tendon injury, and are finding new leaders, such as Breanna Hughes.

The team couldn't ask for much more at the halfway point of the season.

Still, the Utes know they have to push for more and can't get too comfortable. That is their motivation for another big showing against Washington, Baely Rowe said.

"Everyone is feeling great," she said. "We got that 197 on the road and that was a big confidence-booster, and to come home, we want to keep that rolling."
