Provo • BYU freshman guard Zac Seljaas heals quickly.

A week after suffering a right shoulder contusion against Loyola Marymount, Seljaas played on Thursday night when the Cougars hosted league-leading Saint Mary's at the Marriott Center in a key West Coast Conference game.

Seljaas entered the game with about six minutes gone and promptly made a 3-pointer to give the Cougars an 18-13 lead.

He missed Saturday's game against Pepperdine and was listed as day-to-day on Wednesday.

New lineup

For the first time in 13 games, BYU coach Dave Rose shuffled his starting lineup on Thursday night.

Freshman Jakob Hartsock started in place of Nate Austin, who had started in 12 straight games since entering the lineup for sophomore Corbin Kaufusi.

It was the first career start for Hartsock, who had a career-high nine points in last Saturday's 88-77 win over Pepperdine.

Homebodies

Thursday's game marked just the sixth road game of the season for Saint Mary's. The Gaels have played 15 games at home and hadn't played outside the state of California since last March's West Coast Conference tournament in Las Vegas.

Would Rose ever consider such a home-heavy schedule?

"We would play the same team over and over again, if that happened," Rose joked. "They have played 20 some odd games and haven't left the state of California except once, since the last time they were in here. That was in Vegas. So that's unique, I bet."

Fischer's ties

Growing up in rural West Virginia, BYU guard Chase Fischer knew one thing about tiny Saint Mary's College in Northern California.

"I knew that Mickey McConnell was there," Fischer said. "That's about it."

McConnell starred for the Gaels from 2007-11 and now plays professionally in France.

"I followed [McConnell]," Fischer said on Wednesday after practice at the Marriott Center. "But I had no clue five, six years ago I would be sitting here talking about Saint Mary's in California. I hadn't heard much about them. But now I know plenty about them. It is kind of interesting how things work out."

Briefly

Officials for the game were Tony Padilla, John Higgins and Kelly Self. … Saint Mary's has six players from Australia: Tanner Krebs, Jordan Hunter, Emmett Naar, Dane Pineau, Kyle Clark and Jock Landale. Another Australian, center Jock Perry, will join the senior-less team next year. Guard Stefan Gonzalez, from Pocatello, Idaho, was high school teammates with BYU signee Connor Harding.
