Utah's gymnastics team could have a new all-around star — or two — emerging.

The season-ending Achilles' tendon injury to Kari Lee is forcing the Utes to use Breanna Hughes and Samantha Partyka as all-around competitors.

On Monday, the two helped the Utes beat Arizona with some of the best performances of their careers.

Hughes won the all-around with a 39.525 while Partyka scored a 39.3.

Hughes won the uneven bars with a 9.925, but her most impressive event might have been her 9.85 balance beam routine.

Monday marked the first time Hughes has competed in the event since 2014, when she often struggled on the beam.

Partyka made her debut on the uneven bars and scored a 9.8, then closed out the meet with a 9.975 on the floor.

Hughes has struggled on the beam in the past, but said her routine felt awesome on Monday.

"It feels awesome having a strong team push you to get better," she said. "I just had to go out there and trust my training."

Utah coach Tom Farden said Hughes has more confidence than ever.

"You can see how much she has grown," he said. "Her spark is undeniable, and it is great to see her hitting on all cylinders."

MaKenna Merrell scored a 9.75 as Lee's replacement in the vault lineup and 9.85 in the floor lineup.

Utes coach no fan of Monday meets

The Monday night meet was a rare one for the Utes, who have competed at home only six Mondays in the past 20 years.

The meet was held on a Monday so it could be broadcast on the Pac-12 Networks and while they understand the need for TV exposure, the Utes acknowledged it wasn't an ideal day.

It not only leaves them with a short week since they compete on Saturday at UCLA, but it wasn't popular with fans either, as the Utes had just 13,162 in attendance, a season low.

"I don't know what the Pac-12 is going to do in the future, but I am going to fight to protect our fanbase and revenue streams and push for meets on Fridays and Saturdays," Farden said.

How they rank

Utah remained No. 7 in the latest rankings released on Monday with a 196.342 average while Florida held the top spot with a 197.438 average.

The Utes are ranked No. 8 on the vault (49.125), No. 3 on the uneven bars (49.292), No. 5 on the balance beam (49.125) and are unranked on the floor with a 48.8 average. —
