South Jordan • After spending three quarters trying to come back against Bingham, visiting Copper Hills grabbed its first lead of the game early in the fourth quarter.

The Grizzlies had the advantage and the momentum, but they did not have Yoeli Childs.

Childs, a BYU commitment, started making 3-pointers from the top of the key as Bingham regained control and sent the previously undefeated Griz to its first loss with a 73-64 win to avenge an earlier loss to Copper Hills in the Elite Eight tournament.

"From the beginning of the year, we've just got so much better every game. From the Elite 8 tournament to Vegas, we got a ton better," said Childs, who finished with 26 points and 10 rebounds as Bingham grabbed first in Region 3.

Childs scored the first two buckets in the game as Bingham (11-2, 3-0) scored the first eight points. That early cushion remained in place until the beginning of the fourth quarter, when consecutive baskets by Porter Hawkins, who led Copper Hills (12-1, 2-1) with 20 points, gave his team a 44-43 advantage.

But Childs immediately hit a 3-pointer as the Grizzlies' lead lasted eight seconds.

After a drive for a bucket by Copper Hills' Preston Sanchez tied the contest at 46, Childs scored on a hook shot and followed with another 3-pointer from the top of the arc.

"I tell you what, he's gonna shoot it," Bingham coach Jake Schroeder said. "He's worked hard on his game. I challenged him this game to work inside and he scored the first four or six points from the block — and that's where he's at his best. But obviously he's worked hard to expand his game and that makes him a tough cover for a lot of guys."

Sanchez finished with 19 points while Stockton Shorts added 17 for the Grizzlies. For Bingham, Childs was joined in double figures by junior Samuta Avea.

A transfer from Hawaii, Avea spent much of the second half saddled with four fouls. But when he got off the bench, Avea scored seven of his 18 points in a minute-and-a-half stretch late in the game.

"He's got some family here and friends," said Schroeder of Avea. "When the game's big, he's gonna step up."

After the game, Copper Hills coach Andrew Blanchard said his team didn't approach the night thinking about staying undefeated.

"We want to get a region championship and we took a step back tonight," Blanchard said. —
