Logan • Utah State started retooling its football staff Thursday, when Kendrick Shaver and Frank Maile were named co-defensive coordinators by head coach Matt Wells.

The Aggies lost five assistants after the just-completed season, including both coordinators. Shaver's promotion and Maile's hiring are the first moves made to fill those vacancies.

In his new job at Utah State, Shaver will also coach safeties. Meanwhile, Maile will serve as the assistant head coach and work with the defensive line.

"… Kendrick and Frank will do a great job together leading our young men on that side of the ball," Wells said.

Shaver spent his first three seasons on staff as Utah State's cornerback coach. He was promoted to defensive passing game coordinator in 2014.

During his years at Utah State, the Aggies have posted a record of 43-24 and played in five straight bowl games, winning three of them.

Referring to Shaver, Wells said, "[This] is a reflection of his tremendous work in the secondary with our defensive backs, his knowledge of our system and his loyalty to this program."

Shaver is a 2002 graduate of Missouri State. He previously coached at Eastern Kentucky, Northeastern Oklahoma A&M and Northern Colorado before coming to Utah State in 2011.

Maile graduated from Utah State in 2007. He spent five years on the Aggie coaching staff, including three as the defensive line coach, before moving on to Vanderbilt the past two seasons.

Last year, the Commodores ranked among the top 35 nationally in nine categories, including scoring defense (21.0) and total defense (28th).

"I'm looking forward to returning to Utah State and having the opportunity to work with so many of the players and coaches I have in the past," said Maile. "Utah State football has great momentum. I hope to continue leading the young men of the program to even greater achievements."

Said Wells: "… Frank has a tremendous amount of experience with our defense and our program, both in terminology and daily operations. His transition into this position will be very natural.

"Frank did a tremendous job at Vanderbilt, helping to improve that defense, and I have great confidence that he will continue to do special things here."
