Travis Pastrana has seen his fair share of risk, big air and extremity. For a guy who pioneered careening through the air on a motorcycle, the extreme sports landscape has gotten a little bit stagnant.
To push the bar further, Pastrana introduced the inaugural Nitro World Games on Monday, set to be staged next summer at Rice-Eccles Stadium.
The competition will feature seven gold medal events on July 16, 2016.
"It's going to be something that's amazing to watch for everyone of all ages," Pastrana said.
The idea was conceived five years ago, with Pastrana and Nitro Circus CEO Michael Porra seriously working on it for three years before selecting Utah as the premiere host. The event will feature freestyle motocross, bicycle motocross, skateboarding, scooter and inline skating competitions.
"We believe that action sports is in very badly need of a total reinvention and that's the driving force behind these games," Porra said.
The event will implement a redesigned scoring system, innovative ramps and jumps, and improved safety features.
"We're going to go higher, we're going to go bigger, but at the end of the day, I want to be the most safe event that allows these guys to progress," Pastrana said.
Jeff Robbins, CEO of the Utah Sports Commission, said he estimates the event will bring $8 million to $10 million in economic impact to the state.
Utah Gov. Gary Herbert described the opportunity to host the games as "auspicious," further diversifying Utah's economy and burnishing the state's status as a leader in sports and recreation.
"I think that the Nitro World Games promises to add a new sports legacy to our already robust curriculum that we have here for sports," Herbert said.
Pastrana said he won't be competing, taking the backseat to a new roster of athletes from around the world who qualify.
Instead, he'll watch his brainchild try to make recently limited extreme sports limitless once again.
"Let's judge on who's willing to take those biggest airs and do the things that have never been done before."
