Tom Dublinski, a member of two NFL championship teams and the first University of Utah quarterback drafted into the league, has died of cancer at age 85.

A Chicago native, Dublinski ranked fifth in the nation in total offense as a senior in 1951 when he led Utah to a Skyline Conference championship and 7-4 overall record. Nicknamed "the Dubber," he was drafted in the eighth round by the Detroit Lions (one of 12 franchises in that era) and appeared in several games as a backup quarterback during each of the team's NFL title seasons of 1952 and '53. He shared the job with Bobby Layne in 1954, appearing in all 12 games as the Lions finished 9-2-1.

In his 11-year pro career, Dublinski also played for the New York Giants of the NFL, Denver of the AFL and Toronto and Hamilton of the CFL. He was inducted into Utah's Crimson Club Hall of Fame in 1993.

Dublinski's life will be celebrated Friday from 6-8 p.m. at Starks Funeral Parlor, 3651 S. 900 East. A memorial mass is scheduled at 11 a.m. Saturday at Our Lady of Lourdes, 1065 E. 700 South.
