Misfiring at the free-throw line and turning the ball over 24 times, BYU fell 66-65 at Long Beach State in a game that concluded just before 2 a.m. MT on Tuesday morning.

The Cougars made just eight of 21 free throws and trailed almost the entire game after taking an early 10-2 lead.

After BYU trailed by as many as 12 points in the first half and most of the second half, Kyle Collinsworth's jumper with 4:56 remaining tied the score at 59-59.

But Branford Jones' three-point play with 3:57 left put the 49ers in front again, and BYU could not pull even or take the lead despite several opportunities in the last few minutes.

Collinsworth made one of two free throws with 39 seconds left to cut the deficit to 66-65, but neither team would score again after his miss, the Cougars' 13th missed free throw of the contest.

After LBSU's Nick Faust missed two free throws with three seconds left, the Cougars had a chance, but could not get off a shot as both inbounds passes were knocked away.

Corbin Kaufusi led BYU with 17 points, while Collinsworth had 12 while battling foul trouble.

The Cougars were wide-awake when the game started, taking a quick 10-2 lead.

Then they dozed off, apparently.

LBSU went on a 16-0 run as the Cougars had 14 straight empty possessions.

Collinsworth picked up his second foul, on an iffy charging call, during the stretch, and Chase Fischer also spent time next to the coaches with two first-half fouls. Fischer eventually fouled out.

Trailing 27-15 after Maryland transfer Faust drilled a 3-pointer with about seven minutes left in the first half, the Cougars went back to Collinsworth and slowly climbed back in it.

Jordan Chatman hit a pair of 3-pointers off the bench, and when Kaufusi made a 3-point play with 38 seconds left, BYU had cut the deficit to six at the break.

The Cougars committed 14 turnovers in the first half, while making just 12 field goals.
