Provo • Angry, upset, irritated, mad and frustrated.

All of those emotions applied to the 7-3 BYU Cougars as they returned to campus early Monday morning for a team meeting and film-viewing session for the first time since Saturday night's 20-16 loss to Missouri at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City.

"We are all about the same: mad and frustrated," coach Bronco Mendenhall said in his Monday news briefing at the student athlete building. "One got away that we thought we had a great chance to win, and we felt like we did have a chance [even after] dissecting the film and watching it every possible way. There were plenty of opportunities for us to travel all that way and get a win. And we didn't. And so that is frustrating."

Next up is Saturday's final home game of the season at LaVell Edwards Stadium against 3-7 Fresno State (1 p.m., BYUtv) of the Mountain West Conference, but the Cougars acknowledged Monday that they are still battling a case of the blues. The loss to 5-5 Missouri represented another blown opportunity to take down an opponent from a Power 5 conference, a chance that probably won't come again until next September against Arizona in Glendale, Ariz.

"We are just kind of bummed," said defensive end Graham Rowley. "In our team meeting, coach Mendenhall talked about that. You can be bummed, or you can hope for the best. And that's what we are going to do. I mean, nothing you can really do about that now. It sucks, but we learn from our mistakes."

Also lost was BYU's hopes, as slim as they might have been, of getting an invitation to a New Year's Six bowl game. Now the goal is to go undefeated at home this season with a win for the 17 or so seniors who will be honored before the Fresno State game, and try to become the first BYU team to win 10 games since 2011.

"It was a tough loss," said receiver Mitch Mathews, one of the players involved in the handful of plays the Cougars wish they could have back. "The way we played against [Missouri] wasn't our best, but to have it that close means we can play with anyone. So we look towards the positive."

Trailing 20-16 with less than five minutes remaining, the Cougars faced a third-and-15 at their own 21 when quarterback Tanner Mangum scrambled and spotted Mathews breaking toward him downfield. Mathews got his hands on the pass just as a defender arrived. But the pass fell incomplete, no penalty was called, and the Cougars had to punt.

"It was a tough circumstance, coming back to that thing, and getting pulled on," Mathews said. "I would never blame a no-call for that [failure]. A face mask or anything. But for me I wish I would have come down with it, for Tanner and for the rest of the team."

Defensive end Bronson Kaufusi, who Mendenhall said played "one of the best games I have seen a defensive player play," said it is now up to him as a team captain to get the players to move on from the loss and prepare well for Fresno State, which showed it can be dangerous with a 42-14 win over Hawaii on Saturday.

"The only way we can move forward is by putting in the film time, and doing everything our coaches tell us to do — practicing hard, taking care of little [nagging] injuries, kind of just hanging in there," Kaufusi said.

The Cougars' defense could be shorthanded against Fresno State, while the offense hopes to get inside receiver Terenn Houk (concussion) back.

Mendenhall said he will appeal the targeting call on linebacker Sae Tautu that will force the junior to miss the first half of Saturday's game if it is not overturned. Also, starting cornerbacks Michael Davis (rib injury) and Micah Hannemann (concussion) are questionable.

"I am anxious for us to play well at home and to finish undefeated at home, which I think is a big thing," Mendenhall said. "I would really like our seniors to have that experience. I am anxious to play well. And to continue to improve this team."
