Portland Timbers goalie Adam Larsen Kwarasey scored on the 11th round of penalty kicks, then saved Sporting KC goalie Jon Kempin's attempt as the Timbers advanced in the MLS Western Conference playoffs on Thursday night.
Portland had taken the lead in the 57th minute on a goal by Rodney Wallace, assisted by Diego Valeri. But Sporting KC tied the game in extra time when Graham Zusi's cross into the box was headed in by Kevin Ellis.
Sporting KC's Krisztian Nemeth gave his team the lead in overtime with a goal in the 96th minute from a tight angle before Maximiliano Urruti's goal in the 118th minute sent the game to penalties.
Impact 3, Toronto FC 0 • At Montreal, Patrice Bernier, Ignacio Piatti and Didier Drogba scored in the first half and the Impact advanced to the Eastern Conference semifinals. Bernier opened the scoring in the 18th minute on a counterattack. Piatti made it 2-0 in the 34th, and Drogba scored 5 minutes later.
