Provo • BYU guards Kyle Collinsworth and Chase Fischer were selected to the all-West Coast Conference men's basketball preseason team on Monday and the Cougars were picked to finish second behind Gonzaga in the regular-season race.

However, there was less than positive news off the court, as BYU announced that Collinsworth has tendinitis in his left knee and is not currently practicing with the team. Collinsworth did not participate in Friday's basketball showcase at the Marriott Center, and likely won't play in the team's intrasquad scrimmage on Wednesday night.

Collinsworth suffered a serious injury to his right knee at the end of his sophomore season in 2014, but rehabbed extensively and was able to play his entire junior season.

A BYU basketball spokesperson said Monday that Collinsworth is "resting and is day to day this week."

In the balloting released at the WCC Basketball Media Day in El Segundo, Calif., on Monday, Gonzaga got nine first-place votes, while BYU got one. Coaches are not allowed to vote for their own teams.

The Zags' placed three stars on the all-conference team: Preseason national player of the year candidate Kyle Wiltjer, senior center Przemek Karnowski and sophomore forward Domanta Sabonis.

Collinsworth made the team for the second straight year after averaging 13.8 points and 8.7 rebounds per game last year while recording an NCAA single-season record six triple-doubles.

Fischer averaged 13.2 points last year while making 103 3-pointers, tops in the WCC.

BYU women picked second

Coach Jeff Judkins' BYU women's basketball team was also picked to finish second behind Gonzaga in the preseason poll, but the Cougars received four first-place votes and were only two points behind the Zags. Gonzaga received six first-place votes.

A pair of BYU seniors, guards Lexi Eaton Rydalch and Kylie Maeda, made the preseason all-conference team. Rydalch, who got married over the summer, led the WCC in scoring as a junior, averaging 20.5 points per game. Maeda, a point guard, averaged 6.2 points and 4.2 assists per game last year.

The BYU women will play an exhibition game against Fort Lewis of Colorado on Nov. 5 before opening their season on Nov. 13 against Utah Valley University in Provo. —
