Skyline junior BrieAnn Goddard placed the ball where she always does on penalty kicks. The result kept the Eagles' season alive and sent them to a place they always seem to go.

The junior defender's placement – right of center and just out of reach of the outstretched goalkeeper — gave Skyline a 4-3 PK victory and advanced the Eagles to the Class 4A semifinals for the fifth consecutive season. It also eliminated Woods Cross, which had rallied late for a 1-1 tie late in regulation.

"I just hit it low and hard where I usually hit it," Goddard said.

Goddard was the sixth Eagle to step to the penalty spot. Skyline led 3-1 after three rounds, before Woods Cross rallied again to knot the score.

Skyline goalkeeper Myah Tatton punched Malorie Ward's attempt high and off the crossbar in the sixth round to set the stage for Goddard.

The Eagles, 4A runner-up each of the past two years, advanced to meet Wasatch in Tuesday's semifinals at Juan Diego High School. Wasatch upset Region 7 champ Alta – a result that elicited a cheer from the Skyline post-game huddle that rivaled the one after Goddard's clincher.

"Alta has been ranked really high and they've been playing really well," Goddard said. "Wasatch, we haven't heard a lot about."

Tatton, a backup last year, said the Eagles' experience in previous Octobers helps them in tight situations similar to what they faced Thursday.

"I feel like it gives us an edge over everyone else," Tatton said. "This is so exciting, and we are ready to be focused and play our game. It's all about soccer right now."

After a scoreless first half, Skyline broke through in the 48th minute when Holly Daugirda tracked down an outlet pass from Bella Sorenson and finished in the lower left corner. It was the senior's team-high 26th goal of the season.

Woods Cross evened the score in the 72nd minute when Haley Stafford flipped the ball over Tatton from 10 yards out. —
