All the pressure will be on the Davis High School girls' soccer team Tuesday when the Class 5A and 4A state tournaments begin at home sites throughout Utah.

The Darts are the only unbeaten, untied team in the state, are the defending 5A champions and are nationally ranked in two polls. They have eight players who have committed to Division One college teams.

Davis hosts former Region 1 rival Northridge on Tuesday in one of 16 games across the state. Veteran coach Souli Phongsavath said that it is business as usual for the Darts.

"At Davis, we always have a bull's-eye on us," he said Monday. "It's bigger this year because of the national ranking and our record. But it hasn't affected us or how we have played."

The Darts, who are led by returning state MVP Ireland Dunn and Olivia Wade, are deep. Phongsavath said Davis has played only half its games this season with its entire team intact, and has not skipped a beat on the field.

"This team is probably one of the most talented teams top to bottom we have ever had," he said. "It is one our deepest teams. ...This team plays overall more attractive soccer possession wise and tactical wise."

That said, Phongsavath does not expect an easy path to a second straight state 5A title.

Fremont, which played the Darts regularly in old Region 1, has only two ties blemishing its record. Viewmont and Layton both gave Davis difficult games during the Region 2 regular season. Brighton is coming on after a slow start. And Lone Peak, a team the Darts defeated to open the season, is back after finishing second a year ago.

The first round of games always give a hint as to the respective strengths of each region, especially in the games that pit number two against number three teams.

There isn't quite as clear of favorite in Class 4A. Defending champion Timpanogos has been up and down this year and will have a difficult opening game at Murray.

Skyline, the runner-up a year ago, is the likely favorite, though the Eagles struggled through one rough week in Region 6 with a loss and tie. East, Alta and Timview could all figure into a tight race.

The Class 3A and 2A state meets begin Wednesday with 16 games at home sites.

Expect Desert Hills, Juan Diego and Logan to battle for the 3A title. Defending champion Rowland Hall looks like the favorite in Class 2A, though its rival Waterford can't be counted out. —
