Orem • After chasing an elusive title for years, Wayne High School finally broke through, winning the 1A UHSAA baseball title in decisive fashion on Saturday against Tabiona. One year after losing in the finals, they came away with a convincing 16-4 victory, led by Jaden Ellett and Landon Chappell.

"All season long, all 17 boys 100-percent trusted the coaches and bought into the system. They're coachable, they listen, they focus on the process," said coach Scott Ellett.

With a title on the line, nerves were high all around. Tabiona started off by allowing four walks to plate the first run, on the way to a five-run first inning.

Jaden Ellet led the Badgers with five RBIs, and the game was never really in question.

"We felt like we had a good game plan last year and it didn't work out for us. State championships can be very elusive," Scott Ellett said. "So, when you have an opportunity and you have a team like this that can get one, it's nice to have it happen. I'm excited for these boys."

After being dissatisfied with their finish last season, they got to work early and often, sometimes putting in work around six in the morning.

"This year, we knew what we had to do. We knew how hard we had to work. We put in the hours and we had some rough patches during that game, but we fought through and did what we had to do to win this game," said Chappell, who contributed key moments on the mound and at the plate.

The small community of Wayne has been waiting years for this moment and it has finally come. According the Ellett, they felt good about this one before they even put up the first run.

"I felt like after I got on base the very first at-bat and got a walk, once I got that steal, I felt like we had it. The emotion went up and we were just going to stay at that level," said Jaden Ellett.

From that point on, it was a celebration for the Wayne community. —
