Midway • Park City may be known more as a winter sports destination than a place that produces great golfers.

But it would be hard to convince anyone who follows Utah high school golf of that fact.

Park City's Mitchell Schow won his third straight individual title to lead the Miners to their eighth straight team title Thursday on the Soldier Hollow Gold Course.

After finishing second the past two seasons, Grand County captured the 2A boys' championship on the Silver Course.

The 2A medalist battle produced the most drama of the day, as Rowland Hall's Garret Furubayashi won a two-hole playoff with Manti's Davis Hardy to capture individual honors.

Asked how a school from a place where golf courses are under snow from four to five months a year still dominates, Park City coach George Murphy smiled and said he planned to keep that a secret.

"There are expectations to see what the previous years' kids have done," he said. "The kids want to up that and keep going with the tradition. They play a lot of tournaments over the summer and put time into the game. There are four or five months when they are not around golf, and sometimes that's not all that bad."

Murphy said the Miners' first-day total was the best the school ever had in a state tournament as Schow, Drew Fleming, Cole Lee, Josh Lansky, Dean Tsandes and Jack Hankat all played well.

"Our approach today was that we were coming in to win it, not to hold on to a lead," said Murphy.

Park City finished with a two-day total of 571 to beat Tooele by 20 strokes. Snow Canyon, Pine View and Carbon rounded out the top five.

Schow, who plans to play for the University of Utah next year, fired a 65 Wednesday and added a final-round 66 Thursday. That was good enough to beat Snow Canyon's Triston Gardner by five shots. Pine View's Noah Schone and Tooele's Jersey Houston rounded out the top four.

Schow said he made more putts Wednesday but struck the ball better Thursday.

"I am going to miss it," he said. "I am excited to play college golf."

Grand County coach Aaron Woodard said that after finishing second the past two seasons, the Red Devils wanted to win the title badly.

"Every day at practice, there was a competition against each other, trying to push each other to be the best," he said. "It worked out today. … As a coach, I couldn't be any prouder. They put in the time and effort and it really paid off."

Masen Ward led Grand County, as Brendon Woodard, Alec Williams and Brayden Ward all scored points.

Grand County beat South Sevier by 15 strokes. Manti finished third followed by Waterford and Rowland Hall.

In the medalist battle, Furubayashi and Hardy both finished with 147. They played No. 18 two times, with Furubayashi winning it with a par.

"To be honest, I was stressed out for an hour and a half," said Furubayashi, a senior, who shot a par 72 Thursday. "That's how good of a competitor Davis is. It was an amazing day. I was hoping both of us could win. We played both rounds together and I felt like we became great friends over two days."

Grand County's Masen Ward finished third, three shots off the pace, while Brendon Woodard tied South Sevier's Rowdee Taylor for sixth. For a complete list of team and individual scores, log on to http://www.utahpga.com.
