Over the past four years, the Class 5A team state championship title in girls' tennis has come consistently down to Davis and Lone Peak.

Lone Peak won crowns in 2011 and 2012, before Davis claimed first in '13. Last year, it was the Knights rebounding to take the 5A trophy with only a single point separating the two.

On the eve of the 2015 championships, Davis coach Andy Wahlstrom and his players probably think they should be on a two-year winning streak right now.

"We had three state champions out of the five divisions, but we lose the championship," Wahlstrom said.

Starting with the first two rounds of the bracket, it'll be Class 5A that begins a week's worth of state tennis at Liberty Park in Salt Lake City. On Thursday, 4A plays its first two rounds, followed by 3A on Friday. The semifinal and championship rounds for all three classes will be Saturday.

Last weekend, Rowland Hall's Katie Foley took the Class 2A title in first singles while the Winged Lions easily won the team title.

Don't expect that kind of landslide to take place in the 5A team standings.

"It'll come down to which side of the bracket some of the players are," Wahlstrom said.

Davis' top player from '14, Breezy Turley graduated. That means that her sister Whitney Turley moves up to first singles while the Darts' Eliza Hafen goes from third to second singles. Both Whitney Turley and Hafen easily won championships in their respective divisions a year ago.

"With her [Breezy Turley] gone, my singles are playing one up," Wahlstrom said. "At two and three singles, getting beat there this year would be a major upset, but this is a different level of competition."

Look for Lone Peak's Leah Heimuli to contend for the 5A singles crown now that the older Turley is gone. In 4A, defending champion Hannah Jones of Bonneville is back.

In Class 3A, Lacey Hancock of Pine View has graduated after winning multiple titles. In Hancock's absence, last year's runner-up — Desert Hills' Madz Eames — might be in the best position to claim the first singles championship. —
