Pasadena, Calif. • It was a play, BYU coach Bronco Mendenhall said, "that works almost every time."

But this time, it didn't.

Tanner Mangum's desperation pass on 4th-and-7 — does that sound familiar? — was picked off by UCLA linebacker Myles Jack with 1:09 remaining, and No. 10 UCLA escaped the Rose Bowl on Saturday night with a 24-23 win over No. 19 BYU.

Mangum, who emerged as a national media darling after throwing a Hail Mary to beat Nebraska and a 35-yard touchdown pass on 4th-and-7 to beat Boise State, ran out of magic this time.

"We were that close to doing it again," he said, gesturing with his fingers and thumb.

Offensive coordinator Robert Anae said the 4th-and-7 called for four receivers to run vertical routes "because our outside receivers had been winning on those" most of the game.

"We were close on it," Anae said. "The guys were breaking downhill. We just didn't get it this time. … We did not make the critical play right at the end. Now we are on the other side."

The drive started with a 19-yard reception by Mitchell Juergens, and 11-yard reception by Mitch Mathews and a 10-yard rush by Adam Hine, who finished with 149 yards on 23 carries.

But Anae went away from Hine on 2nd-and-10 from the UCLA 45, giving the ball to former walk-on Nate Carter. He was held to 3 yards, and then Mangum's third-down throw intended for Devon Blackmon wasn't close to being completed.

"The job is to just make sure we're fresh," Anae said when asked why Carter got the second-down carry, rather than Hine.

The Cougars picked up 161 rushing yards on 41 attempts, but Mangum was sacked four times for minus-23 yards.

"It's like taking a stab to the heart," said Mitchell Juergens. "To come up short, it takes a lot out of you."

The Cougars got three field goals of 40, 45 and 32 yards from Trevor Samson, but the final field goal that gave them a 23-17 lead came after a 16-play drive that stalled at the UCLA 15.

"If we can turn those field goals into touchdowns, this game isn't even close," Juergens lamented.
