Salt Lake City • Rowland Hall's Liz Baer scored direct off a corner kick in stoppage time of the second half as a rematch of last year's 2A state championship game between Rowland Hall and Waterford ended in a 1-all tie.

Waterford took the lead on a goal by McKenna Mumford in the 12th minute before Baer tied the game late and left both teams walking away wanting more.

For Waterford, this was its first big test of the season, and the play of Rowland Hall made things difficult as the game went on.

"We did not work hard the last minute of the game. ... This team will be fit the next time we play them, that is for sure. Our fitness will increase substantially," said Waterford coach Tim Dolbin.

The game was scoreless until a foul set up a free kick for Waterford from 25 yards out. Mumford then proceeded to take a perfectly placed free kick, curving the ball into the left side of the net and out of the reach of Rowland's keeper.

It looked like the goal would stand up until Baer scored off a corner kick.

"We knew it was going to be a super tough game. We haven't had a game this fast paced in a while. We just wanted to come in and try to get a result," Mumford said.

Even with a tie, though, Mumford was not satisfied.

"We played well as a team. It's always frustrating when you lose it at the end of the game, but this is just going to make us better the next time we have to play them."
