Tooele • A standing room only crowd. A brother coaching his brother. A dad coaching his son. And a bitter crosstown rivalry.

All the elements were there Friday night as Tooele opened the Class 3AA North season with a convincing 27-16 win over Stansbury.

"I've never beat them in my career," said Ryan Brady, brother of Buffalo coach Kyle moments before his team sang the school's distinctive "Forever and Forever in Tooele" fight song on their rival's home field. "It means a lot. I'm glad we left on the right foot. We've got a lot more football to play this year."

Brady, who plays both ways and returns kickoffs as well, was one of a number of Buffaloes who enjoyed big games after the team lost a heartbreaker to Murray last week.

This is a team that relies on a power running game behind a big line. Passing is at a premium and there isn't much fancy stuff. It's just a big herd of thundering Buffaloes.

"We've got a really good running game," said Kyle Brady, who seems destined to bringing back a once-struggling program. "Our line is good this year. We just kept the ball moving. That's what wins games. … Our goal is to win the region championship. This is just step one."

This was a sloppy game at times as both teams turned the ball over. Not many teams can lose fumbles twice within their own 10-yard line like Tooele did Friday and still win. But Stansbury miscues helped the Buffs overcome those woes.

As might be expected with a power running game, Tooele didn't get flashy scores. Carver Jaramillo scored on 2- and 1-yard power runs to give Tooele a 13-3 halftime lead.

Brady's 1-yard run on Tooele's first series of the second half made it 20-3 and put home team Stansbury and its fine quarterback Colton Christiansen, son of coach Clint Christiansen, into a hole it could not climb out of.

Not that the Stallions didn't try.

Christiansen scampered 3 yards for a touchdown to cap an 83-yard drive. But Tooele got some big runs from Lincoln Powers, including a touchdown run that made it 27-9.

Stansbury never gave up, getting a 32-yard pass from Christiansen to Cory Roberts. But that was too little too late for the Stallions, who took their first loss of the season. —
