Women's volleyball • Senior Alexa Gray led No. 12 BYU women's volleyball to a three-set (25-17, 25-11, 25-14) victory against Saint Louis Friday night at Chaifetz Arena to begin play in the Marcia E. Hamilton Classic in St. Louis.

Gray led the Cougars with 13 kills on a .296 clip to go along with four digs. Senior Camry Godfrey Willardson had 35 assists and junior Whitney Young Howard had a team-high six blocks. Senior Ciara Parker collected a match-high 19 digs while freshman Veronica Jones added eight kills. Additionally, junior Amy Boswell had nine kills on a .600 clip to go along with five blocks while sophomore Cosy Burnett contributed 10 kills and three blocks in the win.

Utah 3, Montana 1 • Sophomore Adora Anae tallied a match-high 15 kills and registered four of Utah's season-high 11 service aces on the evening, while helping the Utes (4-1) cruise past the Montana Grizzlies (2-2) in four sets (19-25, 25-16, 25-20, 25-18) in non-conference tournament action at Martin Centre in Spokane, Wash.

Montana, who is now coached by former Utah assistant coach Brian Doyon, came out firing on all cylinders, but just as they did this past Tuesday at Utah State, the Utes managed to recollect themselves after the first set and take care of business the next three sets to earn the win.

San Francisco 3, SUU 1 • San Francisco opened the Utah State-hosted Gossner Invitational with a 3-1 victory against Southern Utah on Kirby Court at the Wayne Estes Center.

UVU 3, UWM • Behind 14 kills from junior Macky Fifita and a double-double of 10 kills and 17 digs from freshman Abby Jensen the Utah Valley University volleyball team swept past the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee three sets to none (25-23, 25-20, 25-21) in the NDSU Baymont Inn & Suites Classic opener on Friday afternoon in Fargo.

Women's soccer

BYU 2, Utah 0 • Utah and BYU met up in Provo where the Utes were unable to find the net against a tough No. 9 BYU in the annual Deseret First Duel. The Utes fell to 2-2-1 on the season while the Cougars improved to 4-0-0.

Iowa 2, Utah State 1 • The Utah State women's soccer team dropped the first of two weekend road matches falling to Iowa in Missoula, Mont.

WSU 3, New Mexico State 1 • Riding a pair of rapid-succession first half goals, the Weber State University women stormed to its third consecutive win, knocking off New Mexico in Las Cruces.

Men's soccer

UVU 2, Pacific 1 • Lucas Cawley's overhead bicycle kick in the 98th minute sent Utah Valley University to an overtime win over Pacific at the Johann Memorial Classic in Las Vegas.

Women's golf

The Weber State women's golf team opened up the 2015 fall season with a victory, shooting 293 on their home turf at Davis Park Golf Course in the Wildcat Invitational.

The Wildcats' score of 293 was good for a nine-shot margin of victory over Southern Utah, which finished second at 302. Utah Valley finished third at 305, while Westminster took fourth at 322. Idaho State finished fifth at 347.
