Pleasant Grove • Pleasant Grove assistant football coach and former BYU linebacker Stanley Raass stepped down from his position on Friday after school officials learned he had been charged with domestic violence in the presence of a child for events on Aug. 7 in Lehi.

Raass was a volunteer with the program and was not a member of the Pleasant Grove academic staff. Raass coached the Vikings in the first two games this season after pleading not guilty on Aug. 10 in Lehi City Court to one count of domestic violence and a second count of domestic violence in front of a child. Both charges are class B misdemeanors punishable by up to six months in jail.

According to court documents, Raass was arrested on Aug. 7 and later posted a $3,790 bail. Pre-trial conferences are scheduled for Sept. 21 in Lehi Justice Court. Raass' wife, Summer, has filed for divorce and a protective order.

Alpine School District spokesperson Kimberly Bird was unaware of the incident until contacted by The Salt Lake Tribune on Friday morning. Less than one hour later, Bird confirmed Raass had stepped down from his position with the Vikings after meeting with Pleasant Grove principal Tim Brantley and head coach Les Hamilton.

"The principal Tim Brantley was notified this morning about Stanley Raass. He called in the coach [Les Hamilton] and also Mr. Raass and he immediately stepped down," Bird said.

Brantley declined to confirm or deny Raass' involvement with the football program when contacted for comment, citing confidentiality. Bird later confirmed information regarding coaching staff members is not confidential.

Raass played linebacker for the Cougars in 1994-95 according to the BYU athletic department website, and was named honorable mention All-WAC in 1994.

Hamilton did not return phone calls for comment. The Vikings (1-1) play at Jordan (2-0) at 7 p.m. on Friday night. tphibbs@sltrib.com
