The Skyline girls' soccer team expects much out of senior captains Holly Daugirda and Emma Heyn this season, especially after losing the 4A state title a year ago due to penalty kicks in the title game.

So it was probably no surprise when the two stars each scored two goals to lift the Eagles to an impressive 5-1 victory over Murray on a brutally hot Tuesday afternoon before a big crowd on the Skyline soccer field.

Both the girls and veteran coach Yamil Castillo admitted to feeling a bit nervous when Murray took an early 1-0 lead on a goal by freshman Abby Graham.

"You could feel the momentum on our side completely drop," said Daugirda. "As soon as it happened, we knew we needed to get our act together."

Yet, as Castillo said, there was no sense of panic for the home team.

"We know what we are capable of doing," he said. "The girls finally decided to play the way they can play. It wasn't easy. We started slow and Murray put us on our heals with that first goal."

Skyline, which also got a goal from sophomore Bergen Meyer, held a 3-1 lead at halftime and increased that to 5-1 on goals by Heyn and Daugirda in the second half.

Heyn credited Daugirda for setting up both of her goals. She said the Eagle co-captain made a cross pass to set up a tap-in for the first one, and that she scooped in a Daugirda shot off the cross bar for the second one.

"Whoever scores, scores," said Heyn. "We just want to win. We are playing game by game, but the main goal is to get to the finals and win it all this year."

The Eagles are certainly off to a good start to do just that. They improved to 6-0 overall and 2-0 in Region 6 play and have outscored their opponents 24-3 this season.
