Football season is flying. The second week of high school football is already history. Sad face. In the Week 3 edition of The Tribune's statewide top 25 rankings — Class 5A has asserted its stranglehold, with seven of the top 10 teams, including the entire top five, all residing in the state's largest classification.

Maple Mountain — which survived yet another fourth-quarter finish, this time against Corner Canyon — and Mountain Crest, which hammered Bear River, made the largest jumps in the standings, both moving up six spots. After an embarrassing weekend against Sky View, Logan dropped completely out of the top 25, while Corner Canyon checked in 10 spots lower at No. 24. The Chargers and Herriman, which lost two close games against the state's top two ranked programs — both remain in the top 25 despite their 0-2 records.

Orem and Layton are the newcomers this week. Orem squeaked past Spanish Fork and Layton routed Clearfield. Both are 2-0.

In case you missed The Tribune's classification power rankings, here is the refresher for where things stand in Week 3:

Class 5A:

1. Bingham (2-0) — It wasn't pretty offensively against Herriman, but the Miners showed how stingy their defense is once again with another shutout. Bishop Gorman (Nev.) is next.

2. Brighton (2-0) — Despite the absence of Drew Jensen at quarterback, Simi Fehoko and Co. earned another win against Fremont.

3. Sky View (2-0) — The Bobcats destroyed crosstown rival Logan. There might not be a more complete offensive unit in the state.

4. Jordan (2-0) — The Beetdiggers take issue with the above statement of Sky View. They can score in bunches, but the defense earned the win against Roy.

5. Lone Peak (2-0) — Most impressive performance on Friday night, the Knights dismantled Timpview and broke the T-Birds' 27-game winning streak.

Class 4A:

1. Timpview (1-1) — The Thunderbirds were dominated on Friday, but that doesn't necessarily mean they aren't still one of the best clubs in 4A.

2. East (1-1) — The Leopards were missing some key contributors in a lopsided loss against Centennial (Calif.). Hard to fault them for losing to a consensus national top 10 program.

3. Springville (2-0) — Lacking the flashy appeal, Springville relies on its defense. Another solid performance.

4. Skyline (2-0) — The Eagles defense stole the spotlight once again, but this time the offense was equally impressive in the blowout against West.

5. Maple Mountain (2-0) — Two wins against Woods Cross and Corner Canyon illustrates the Golden Eagles' talent and resolve to win close games.

Class 3AA:

1. Desert Hills (1-1) — Thunder had a huge rebound win after an opening week defeat and the loss of their star player Nephi Sewell.

2. Logan (1-1) — The Grizzlies had no business being on the same field as Sky View, but this program is still in the hunt within their own classification.

3. Pine View (2-0) — The Panthers had little trouble with Uintah.

4. Tooele (1-0) — Beat Idaho powerhouse, Shelly, 35-14 on Saturday.

5. Dixie (1-1) — Tre Miller was spectacular in the win against Mohave, Ariz.

Class 3A:

1. Juan Diego (2-0) — Dominated previously fourth-ranked Manti in every aspect.

2. Juab (2-0) — The Wasps keep scoring and scoring. Easy win against Grantsville.

3. Morgan (1-1) — The Trojans need to manufacture points offensively, as evident by the 14-7 double overtime loss to South Summit.

4. Canyon View (2-0) — The Falcons are dangerous on offense, and could be a sneaker team in this classification.

5. North Sanpete (1-1) — After losing in close fashion against Stansbury in Week 1, the Hawks impressively handled Class 4A's Timpanogos.

Class 2A:

1. North Summit (2-0) — Needed a late touchdown and two-point conversion to beat Duchesne, but the Braves got it done.

2. South Summit (2-0) — Survived double overtime thriller against Morgan.

3. Beaver (1-1) — Squeaked past rival Kanab.

4. North Sevier (2-0) — Scored 10 points in the fourth quarter, including hitting a 24-yard field with less than a minute remaining against Gunnison to remain undefeated.

5. American Leadership (2-0) — Albeit the opponents faced weren't of high quality, the Eagles' two wins were by a collective score of 82-0.

Class 1A:

1. Diamond Ranch (1-0) — Diamondbacks off in Week 2, face Duchesne next.

2. Rich (0-1) — Lost against Class 2A's Summit Academy, but the Rebels showed they'll contend at this level.

3. Duchesne (1-1) — The Eagles took North Summit down to the wire, and impressed despite the loss.

4. Kanab (1-1) — Lost close game to rival Beaver.

5. Monticello (1-0) — Coming off bye week, Buckaroos will visit Wayne.
