Women's soccer • The University of Utah defeated Houston 4-1 in its home opener on Friday. Max Flom, Taylor Slattery, Natalie Vukic and Katie Rogers scored for the Utes (2-0-1). Utah peppered the visiting goal early with six shots in the first 13 minutes. The breakthrough occurred when a ball was floated into the penalty area during the 14th minute. Megan Trabert nicked the ball with her head and Flom poached her first collegiate goal.

In the 28th minute, the Utes doubled their lead when Paola van der Veen played a lovely through-ball to Slattery. The junior rifled a shot to the lower right corner for her first goal of the season and sixth of her career.

Utah goalkeeper Lindsey Luke played 58 minutes and registered two saves while July Gentry saw her first action as a Ute, playing the final 32 minutes.

Utah Valley 1, Massachusetts 0, OT • In Amherst, Mass., Austin Buxton scored just 46 seconds before the end of the first overtime period as the Wolverines won their season-opener.

Weber State 1, Westminster 0 • Madison Garlock scored in the 73rd minute off an assist from Olivia Hoddy as the Wildcats won the exhibition of the host Griffins.

Women's volleyball • Cosy Burnett led BYU with a career-high nine kills as the Cougars swept Chicago State in their season-opener on Friday in Los Angeles. Camry Godfrey Willardson had a team-high 25 assists as BYU prevailed 25-13, 25-17, 25-22.

• In Lubbock, Texas, Utah State lost its first two matches of the season, falling to Texas Tech 3-0 and to Houston 3-1 at the Texas Tech Fall Invitational. Against Texas Tech, Kaylie Kamalu led the Aggies with eight kills. Junior setter Erica Moscoso led the Aggies with 20 assists. Against Houston, Utah State took leads in each of the first three sets before falling to the Cougars.
