Sandy • As Jordan and Roy traded touchdowns in the first quarter, it was apparent early that a game featuring a stark contrast of offenses might come down to the very end.

Indeed it did.

When the visiting Royals finally were forced to try Jordan's specialty — passing the ball, namely — that's when Roy's last drive was stymied. When it petered out at the Jordan 35-yard line with less than a minute left, the Beetdiggers secured a 34-28 victory.

"Our defense made some big stops there in the fourth quarter to help us seal the deal," Jordan quarterback Drew Lisk said. "Our fumble recovery was huge."

Lisk finished with 335 yards passing on a 22-for-35 night. He did throw a pair of interceptions in the first half, but his 15-yard strike to Spencer Curtis with 9:02 left in the game gave the 'Diggers a 28-21 lead.

After a botched kickoff return, Roy (0-1) got the ball on its own 2-yard line. On their previous possession, the Royals had an 80-yard drive that culminated with a two-yard run by Baby Tee Eteuati.

And the ground-it-out philosophy was working again until Eteuati fumbled the ball at the Roy 29-yard line. Jordan capitalized with a five-yard run by Alec Kener and a 34-21 lead with 3:54 left.

The game wasn't over, however.

Roy put together a quick 73-yard drive, and a four-yard run to paydirt by Brayden Sampson with 2:16 remaining turned the game into a one-possession contest.

Jordan, after recovering an onside kick attempt, turned the ball over on downs at the Royals' 29 with 1:26 remaining.

It was only the third time of the night that the Beetdiggers' pass-first offense was stymied.

"We should have been able to finish it. We took a couple of shots downfield, and that part was on me," Jordan coach Eric Kjar said. "We took a chance and it probably wasn't that smart."

The Royals' last-gasp drive started with quarterback Coleby Stark finding Hunter Mather for a 41-yard pass into Jordan territory. That was only the sixth completion of the game for Roy, which piled up 324 yards rushing the ball.

However, Roy then had four straight incompletions to essentially end the game.

"We're not disappointed. I mean, two-and-oh, we'll take two wins," Lisk said. "We've got a lot of stuff to clean up though, for sure." —
