FOOTBALL • Stefan Cantwell passed for 244 yards and two touchdowns, and Stephen Shepard rushed for 76 yards and a TD as Snow College defeated Mesa Community College 24-21 on Saturday in Ephraim in the season-opener for both teams

The teams battled to a scoreless draw at halftime before Snow opened the scoring with a 35-yard field goal by Moose Bingham in the third quarter.

A couple of minutes later, Cantwell connected with Jonah Trinnaman on a 46-yard touchdown pass to give Snow a 10-0 lead. Trinnaman finished with seven catches for 120 yards and the TD.

The Badgers led 24-7 before Mesa scored two touchdowns in the final 2 minutes to narrow the gap.

WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL • The No. 23 Utah Utes earned a three-set sweep over Cal State Northridge at the Huntsman Center, downing the Matadors 25-20, 25-18 and 25-8 on Saturday morning. In the evening, the Utes (2-1) closed out the Utah Classic with a loss to Lipscomb, 25-19, 28-30, 25-23, 25-23.

A trio of sophomores led the Utes offensively against Northridge, as Katoa and Adora Anae posted a team-high nine kills each and Carly Trueman added eight kills on .700 hitting. Senior Kendall Cygan led Utah with 15 assists, but redshirt freshman Jessie Jorgensen added 14 assists and a team-high 15 digs to record the first double-double of her career.

In the nightcap, Adora Anae set another career high with 26 kills.

No. 11 BYU 3, No. 7 North Carolina 1 • In Los Angeles, Alexa Gray had 22 kills as the Cougars beat the Tar Heels 25-27, 25-19, 25-17, 26-24 in the Women of Troy Baden Invitational.

Utah Valley 3, Incarnate Word 1 • In Malibu, Calif., Lexi Thompson had 13 kills as UVU prevailed 26-24, 25-23, 19-25, 25-19 in the Pepperdine Asics Classic.

Utah State 3, Louisiana-Lafayette 0 • In Lubbock, Texas, the Aggies bounced back from a pair of losses to earn their first victory of the year at the Texas Tech Fall Invitational. Kaylie Kamalu had 14 kills and 10 digs as the Aggies prevailed 25-18, 25-15, 25-15.

SLCC 3, Iowa Western CC 2 • At the Western Wyomin Tournament, the eighth-ranked Bruins beat the No. 1 team in the country 28-26, 25-14, 23-25, 14-25, 15-9.

SLCC was led by Jessica Quayle, who had 16 kills, hitting .412 and six blocks. Andrea Brady contributed 10 kills, and Rachel Davis racked up 55 assists.
