Provo • Steve Kaufusi has a pretty good job these days.

BYU's defensive line coach is not only coaching his own son — All-America candidate Bronson Kaufusi — and watching his other son, Corbin, make an impact on the Cougars' basketball team, he's overseeing the deepest position on the football team.

"We've got plenty of bodies and a lot of experience," Steve Kaufusi said. "We feel really good about rotating the six guys [in three spots] who have stepped up."

The line is so deep that a pair of seniors who combined to start in 17 games last year, Remington Peck and Graham Rowley, most likely will be coming off the bench in 2015.

The Cougars won't release their two-deep chart until Monday, but it appears that senior Bronson Kaufusi (left end), junior Travis Tuiloma (nose tackle) and senior Logan Taele (right end) will be the starters when BYU travels to Nebraska on Sept. 5. Tuiloma's backup in the position coach Bronco Mendenhall calls one of the most important on the field will be Kesni Tausinga, a sophomore from Bingham High.

Junior Tomasi Laulile and redshirt freshman Moses Kaumatule could get some playing time at defensive end.

Tuiloma said stopping the run will be the defense's biggest strength this season.

"We will be good," he said.

A former walk-on, Taele supplanted Peck and Rowley as a starter at the end of last season. Bronson Kaufusi has moved back to his natural position after giving outside linebacker a try last year.

"I think he's picked up where he left off," Steve Kaufusi said of his son's move back to defensive end. He has put on a little more weight, playing with his hand down. But yeah, we feel good about those six, and he's one of those six."

Hill confident in running backs

There's plenty of concern in Provo about finding an adequate replacement for running back Jamaal Williams, who withdrew from school two days before camp opened, but not from starting quarterback Taysom Hill.

"I am very happy with those guys," Hill said. "I think Adam [Hine], from the scrimmage, was really able to step up and make a lot of plays. I was really happy to see that, because we hadn't seen that out of him yet. He was limited all spring and summer with injuries. Algie [Brown] is Algie. He's a stud. Then Francis [Bernard] has stepped up and is one of those guys who has earned playing time. I fully expect him to play next week."

Briefly

Hill said if he had to pick a camp MVP, it would be center Tejan Koroma. … Mendenhall was expected to announce team captains on Thursday night. He said Eric Takenaka, Mitchell Juergens and Micah Hannemann are battling to be the opening-day punt returner. … Mendenhall said OL Kyle Johnson has missed some practices with "a little bit of a back injury, but everything is good. He's fine."
