Cottonwood Heights • While it might be too early to be making predictions, the toughest competition the nationally-ranked and defending 5A champion Davis girls' soccer team might find this season could come within its league.

That's because the Darts' Region Two rival Viewmont improved to 4-0 on the season with a convincing 3-0 victory over traditional 5A power Brighton on Tuesday afternoon on the Bengals' sparkling new field.

The Vikings got a first-half goal from Elle Layton, who buried a shot from about 20 yards out on the right side under 31 minutes into the game, and two second-half scores from Sailor Uffens to hand Brighton its first defeat of the season.

"The girls came out and played hard and we got a good result from it," said Viewmont coach Spencer Keddington. "Elle has been playing real well lately and Sailor has been playing awesome the whole season. She has just been finishing the job."

Brighton was the aggressor early, but couldn't get anything past Viewmont goalie Mackenzie Cable. After watching one shot bounce off the post, Viewmont finally broke through when Layton broke the scoreless tie.

"We are coming on strong and playing with a lot of confidence," said Layton, who was battling an illness. "They are a great team and hard to beat."

Sailor credited her teammates for setting her up on her two scores.

"We are so positive with each other," she said. "Our team is supporting everyone."

This was the second varsity game played on Brighton's new soccer stadium, located south of the Cottonwood Heights Recreation Center. The beautiful natural grass pitch has bleachers, a concessions area, rest rooms and the backdrop of the Wasatch Mountains, making it one of the top prep facilities in Utah.

Viewmont lost two close games to Davis in the regular season a year ago but may have the talent to give the Darts some competition this season.
