PLEASANT GROVE VIKINGS

THE HURRY-UP

Pleasant Grove finished 5-5, 2-4 in Region 4; no postseason in 2014.

OFFENSE

A couple of injuries really hampered the Vikings offense in 2014 — one early and one in the thick of the region schedule. Big offensive guard Tarren Sutch (6-4, 300) went down at the preseason scrimmage and only came back in the ninth week of the season.

About when Sutch got back, that's when wide receiver Jacob Doman hurt his knee down the home stretch.

Both are back, along with plenty of other starters from a year ago.

Quarterback Isaac Hamilton is still only a junior, but with some experience under his belt already. Likewise, senior running back Koy Wilkinson saw enough of the ball in '14 to rush for over 400 yards.

The receiving corps should be a major strength for Pleasant Grove, as senior Malik Overstreet and junior Braxton Rapp will present danger from the outside, while Doman is joined by Coleman Edwards at inside slots.

And Sutch isn't the only big boy on the line. Sophomore Cole Watts (6-7, 295) will get his first taste of varsity ball while senior Matt Raass (6-3, 350) will anchor the line at center.

DEFENSE

Doman and Overstreet are also mainstays in the secondary, where they'll ply their skills at cornerback spots. Malik's younger brother, Will Overstreet, is a sophomore free safety for the Vikes and he'll get help from seniors Mitchell Price and Dillon McSpadden.

Up front, senior Ramsey Mulitalo will hold down the fort at nose guard, and he'll have senior teammate A.J. Fite on one side of the line while PG tries out several candidates on the other side.

In the middle of the field, senior John Raass is back at outside linebacker and he led the Vikings in tackles a year ago with 68. Others on the 'backer unit slated to start are three more seniors: Aaron Sperry, Tate Briggs and Jackson Newman.

WHAT TO EXPECT

It was a tough year in 2014 for Pleasant Grove after a great start. A 4-1 beginning ended with no playoff spot for the Vikings — who were hit by a couple of key injuries and suffered tight region losses to Lone Peak and Riverton down the stretch. At one point, PG had only three defeats by a total of eight points. "We missed the playoffs, that's how tough our conference is," said Les Hamilton, Pleasant Grove's coach. "We need to stay healthy and have a few things go our way. But depth should be one of our strengths this year."

BIG SHOES

Jacob Doman has interested college parties in BYU and Stanford, but might be destined to play for an Ivy League school like Cornell after high school. In the meantime, he'll have a critical role — hopefully for him an injury-free one — at wideout on offense and cornerback on defense as the Vikings try to get into the postseason.
