CYPRUS PIRATES
THE HURRY-UP
Cyprus finished 0-10 overall, 0-6 in league play and did not qualify for the 2014 playoffs.
OFFENSE
New coach Jed Smith is purposely keeping the type of offense he plans to run under wraps as he works to see what fits with his personnel. It looks as though Brooks Marshall will be the quarterback. "We are still trying to figure out who we are going to put where at this point," said Smith. "We're in flux with that."
DEFENSE
Smith is more upbeat about his defense. He is practicing both a three- and a four-man-front configuration to use depending on the competition. He has few veteran players, but said the senior class is strong. Bryan McConha at strong safety, Thomas Lanktree at linebacker and Nafe Tututua all look good.
WHAT TO EXPECT
New turf on Cyprus' venerable field has raised some excitement. But, after going winless a year ago, the Pirates are still in a rebuilding phase and have a ways to catch up to the other teams in Region 6.
BIG SHOES
At 5-foot-7, 170 pounds, Bryan McConha isn't a big athlete, but he will likely come up big for the Pirates. He will play strong safety, tailback and return kicks.
