Pine View Panthers

The Hurry-Up

Pine View might be the biggest mystery team in Class 3AA South. The Panthers lost some of their stars, including BYU quarterback commit Kody Wilstead, from last year's semifinal squad, but have seldom not been competitive under veteran coach Ray Hosner.

Offense

Pine View runs a spread offense that is more pass-oriented than some of its league rivals. Senior quarterback Riley Livingston has a lot of experience in the program that could make up for lack of experience on the field. Senior receivers Steve Bangerter and Kaden Bringhurst will need to have good years. A veteran line led by CJ Braatan, Jaden Smith and Mason Wiley should give Livingston good protection. Underclassmen Kobe Toalian, Dylan Robertson and Kawika Santiago will have to step up quickly if Pine View hopes to return to state.

Defense

Pine View runs a 3-4 defense. The Panthers' strength this year should be linebackers Brooks Barney, Kyle Taulili, Lorenzo Tupe, Mason Wiley and Kobe Topalian. Defensive linemen Tyler Heaton and Dylan Robertson, who led the Panthers in sacks a year ago, also return. The young secondary could be a concern, though Cameron Reber and brothers D'Angelo and Jacob Mpungi could surprise.

What to expect

Pine View is always good in a tough region, but may be a bit down this season. Expect the Panthers to battle Cedar City and Snow Canyon for the fourth and final playoff spot from tough Class 3AA South. That's not necessarily a bad thing. The fourth-place team from this league has often done well in the tournament.

Projected Finish in Region: 4

Big Shoes

Riley Livingston saw only limited action a year ago at quarterback behind Kody Wilstead, who was one of the state's best. The key to Pine View's success this year might be how well Livingston can hook up with Steve Bangerter, who returns as one of the state's leading receivers.
