TOOELE BUFFALOES

THE HURRY-UP

Tooele finished 7-4 overall, 4-2 in league play, and lost to Cedar, 34-22, in the first round in 2014.

OFFENSE

Tooele has a lot to crow about heading into the 2015 campaign. The Buffs averaged 285 yards per game on the ground from the wing-T last year — the third-highest mark in the 3AA classification — and Ryan Brady, the second-leading returning rusher in the class, and the entire offensive line are back again this season.

"I think with the guys we have coming back, we have a good shot to be up there in the top half of our classification, but I still think we have a lot of work to do," said Tooele coach Kyle Brady. "We have two really tough teams coming into region, in Logan and Judge, who are going to be, I think, the top teams in our region. Then Stansbury is always going to be one of the better teams. I know we have a lot of experience coming back, but we still have a lot of work to do as well."

The passing game, which, quite frankly, was abysmal last season — remember, it wasn't an emphasis, though — should drastically improve. Carver Jaramillo displayed the qualities of a winning signal-caller, leading Tooele to an undefeated JV record at quarterback while starting at safety on the varsity level last year. Ty Allred — a big-bodied, physical receiver and one of the top rodeo cowboys in the nation — will be the No. 1 target through the air, with Matt Bosthell and Christian Paystrup contributing significantly.

Ryan Brady will move from H-back to fullback, with Demetrius Smith and Nate Reynolds emerging as viable options to relief the pressure off Brady.

DEFENSE

Tooele was one of the worst teams at stopping the run last season, while its secondary posted the lowest yards per game average in the entire classification. Kyle Brady said the key this season is wrapping up and finishing tackles.

"We've got a few spots that we need to fill, but we're pretty young and athletic [on defense], though," Brady said. "As long as we can make tackles, stop yards after contact, we'll be OK. Kids are doing a really good job in the summer getting in the right positions. We just need to do better of making the initial tackle."

Ryan Brady and Jaramillo highlight the secondary once again this season, while Gunner Clegg, Allred and Blake Paystrup are expected to have special years clogging the middle from their linebacker positions.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Tooele has to stop the run. Stansbury and Judge Memorial are two of the top rushing programs in the classification. If the Buffs figure out how to get off the field defensively, everything is positioned for a very successful season, especially considering the strength on the offensive line.

BIG SHOES

Carson Connelley started several games after Tyler Daley, who was a three-year starter at center, fell victim to injury. Replacing the production of Daley for an entire season is the largest hole to fill.
