Carbon Dinos

2014 RECAP

Carbon finished 3-7, 0-5 in 3A North, and did not qualify for the playoffs.

OFFENSE

If things are going well for the Dinos, don't expect to see the ball go into the air very much this year.

Talking about his offensive cache of players, Carbon coach Josh Huntsman starts with his running backs. Lots and lots of running backs. How many actually flourish is a question, but Huntsman expects that senior Dallyn Mower will likely be the pacesetter in the backfield. Mower rarely came off the field a year ago and will be in his fourth year of starting for his senior season.

Mower is the Carbon fullback. When the ball isn't going to him, look for Bradlee Chatterton, Wyatt Wilson and Jacky Byrge to get their chances at moving the sticks.

Quarterback is a bit of a question mark, but look for Taylor Rasmussen to get a shot during his senior season. "He's a heady player," Huntsman said.

When Rasmussen wings it, he should have some capable targets. Athletic senior Marcos Castro is a threat at receiver, while Peyton Fausett and Taylon Abeyta provide solid options from tight end.

The middle part of the Dinos' offensive line looks set with Ryan Jannoud at center, flanked by Kolton Anselmo and Josh Thayn at guard. One tackle will be Reul Christensen, but the other side of the line has a vacancy.

DEFENSE

Since Carbon doesn't have any weeks off during the regular-season slate, nagging injuries could hurt the most on defense.

Most of the Dinos' offensive leaders are also starters on the other side of the line. But it's stopping the ball where players like Mower and Fausett really shine. Mower had almost a hundred tackles last year and the big Fausett (6-foot-6, 230 pounds) is a force at defense end.

"That's where he's gonna shine," Huntsman said of Fausett.

Fausett will get some experienced help from Anslemo at the nose guard position, but the other D-end spot is unsettled for Carbon.

The Dinos will rely heavily on linebackers in their 3-5 defensive scheme, and Mower is a big asset in the middle. Logan Olsen, who got some playing time offensively at quarterback last year, will also be a 'backer for Carbon — which will also look to sophomore Tristan Armstrong to develop quickly.

Jacky Byrge picked off a pair of passes for the Dinos a year ago and returns to the secondary. Byrge will get help from Chatterton at corner and the indefatigable Castro will lead the safety corps.

"He looks like he could go all day," Huntsman said of Castro.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Huntsman applied for the Carbon job a year ago, but is now coming to Price after Jan Jorgensen moved on after only a year.

Since the Dinos didn't win a region game in 2014, no one is expecting Huntsman's crew to immediately challenge for championships. But the new coach believes his team has enough talent to at least contend for a playoff spot.

"We want to compete to get into the state playoffs. Three region wins would be nice, but two is our goal so we can get there," Huntsman said. "We're looking to continue the good things that Coach Jorgensen started last year."

BIG SHOES

Peyton Fausett will be trouble as an alternate receiving target from his tight end position. "His hands are great," Huntsman said. But where Fausett will really stand out is on defense as his presence should give opponents some pause going in that direction of the line.
