Summit Academy Bears

Summit Academy, a public charter school located in Bluffdale, made a big splash last season by finishing second in Class 2A in only its third year as a program.

But Bears coach Scott Gorringe said he won't be satisfied until his team wins its first state championship.

Summit Academy could very much be in the mix this season.

"I feel good about our team this year," said Gorringe. "We should be a competitive team who will provide a good challenge to the other 2A teams on our schedule. We return the majority of our offensive line this season, which helps, as we are replacing a majority of our skill position players from last year's team."

Gorringe said the offensive and defense lines will be the strongest part of his team, but he is concerned about the lack of experienced skill players.

Last year's record • 10-2 overall; lost in state 2A title game to South Summit.

Key returners • Linemen Dakota Pannell and Sterling Hullinger, wide receiver and linebacker Hunter Mangum, receiver and linebacker Tyson Davis, running back and safety Kohlten Bills, and tight end and defensive end Sam Velez all return.

Player to watch • New quarterback Justin Miller.

Biggest hole • Though some players return, the Bears are short on experience in the skill positions.

Need to know • Gorringe and his staff built most of the stadium including bleachers and the press box.
