Logan • Among the things Utah State coach Matt Wells said he is looking for in fall camp is the next Jalen Davis, the Aggies' sophomore cornerback who was named a True Freshman all-American by 247Sports last year.

"Not one of you guys asked me about him at all last year this time," Wells said to media members with a laugh. "We're going to get some cool stories like that."

So who is his pick for the breakout star of 2015? Wells has his eye on safety Devin Centers, who was named to the all-Mountain West honorable mention team last year after he played in 13 games, starting six.

"He has done a phenomenal job progressing through the program," Wells said. "He was a redshirt freshman then a nickel and then into a full time role. You are going to see him back there plenty this year."

Others Wells pegged as having possible bigger roles are receiver Devonte Robinson and offensive lineman Austin Albrecht.

No sympathy

It has been well documented that injuries have taken their toll on the Aggies in recent years, a situation that has the coaches as well as the players convinced they need ample depth everywhere to handle the season.

However, Wells shrugged off any thought his team had run across some bad luck.

"It's a collision sport," he said. "Not contact. It's part of the game. I'm sympathetic from a personal standpoint, but we have tremendous leaders and it's the next man up."

Reloading

Junior Ricky Ali'ifua, penciled in as a starter at defensive end opposite Jordan Nielsen, said the defense has taken the mentality that they are reloading, not rebuilding, even though they lost some big talent such as Zach Vigil, Frankie Sutera, Brian Suite and B.J. Larsen.

"Every year we have players stepping up and that is the mindset we have this year," he said. "The defense doesn't rely on one single player, we all have a job to step up."

Speaking of Vigil

Nick, the Aggies' starting inside linebacker, said he is in touch with his brother, Zach, who signed with Miami as a free agent and might be playing his way into the rotation.

"He said he is No. 2 right now which is pretty good for a free agent," Nick said. "It's hot and humid down there but he likes it and he loves the coaches and gets along with the guys pretty well."

Zach apparently hasn't forgotten his Aggies though.

"He is still giving me advice," Nick said.
