Vancouver, British Columbia • It was a chance for some of Real Salt Lake's lesser lights to shine — but they weren't very bright.

A vastly revamped RSL lineup was thumped 4-0 by the Vancouver Whitecaps on Saturday night.

"It was not good," said RSL goalkeeper Jeff Attinella. "Any time you concede one like that, it's not fun. It's a bit embarrassing."

RSL (7-9-8) suffered its second consecutive league loss and remain three points below the playoff bar after using just two players that toiled in Tuesday's CONCACAF Champions League road win over CSD Guatemala.

"When guys haven't played together much and they're coming in here against a red-hot Vancouver team, obviously it makes a difference," said Attinella. "But credit to the guys that stepped in. Nobody quit, which, when you're down 4-0 like that, is pretty easy to do."

Christian Techera scored two second-half goals and Jordan Harvey added a pair of assists as the Western Conference-leading Whitecaps (13-8-3) extended their league unbeaten streak to four games. But Techera's goals proved to be moot after Octavio Rivero converted a penalty kick in the sixth minute and Pa-Modou Kah scored in the 40th to give the Caps a 2-0 lead.

"It was a tough night for everyone," said RSL coach Jeff Cassar. "We had tough circumstances against a first-place team. I thought there was a period of time in the first half that we settled in a little bit and played some good soccer. But the second goal was really the one that put our heads down a little bit."

Cassar's crew has allowed 11 goals in the past three games, but he did not get to see much of the action from the sidelines. Cassar was ejected in the 29th minute for disputing a foul against his squad and will serve a one-game suspension in RSL's next MLS game, against Portland at home next weekend.

Cassar said the suspension was "totally uncalled for" and that he did not use any foul language. He will consider launching an appeal after conferring with ownership and management.

Vancouver coach Carl Robinson went mostly with regulars after using substitutes in a CCL game against Seattle on Tuesday. There was little doubt about who was the better team Saturday as Vancouver's unity and experience showed clearly.

The Whitecaps took control as RSL defender Elias Vasquez suffered more misfortune in Vancouver after his mistake led to an RSL loss here May 30. Whitecaps striker Rivero scored on the spot kick in the sixth minute after Vasquez tripped him while players from both sides were attempting to field a high Vancouver free kick from just outside the box.

Five minutes before halftime, Kah, a central defender, sneaked behind Vasquez to convert a pass from Kekuta Manneh.

In late May, Vasquez failed to clear the ball after goalkeeper Nick Rimando made a save and Techera stole it and scored to give the Whitecaps a 2-1 win.

Techera was sneaky again in the 50th minute Saturday as he ran unobserved behind defenders and flicked in a long rolling cross from Jordan Harvey after Rivero, running between them, failed to get his foot on it.

Techera scored again on a shot from outside the top of the RSL box after another Harvey pass came to him following a Pedro Morales free kick.

Shortly before the end of regulation, RSL defender Abdoulie Mansally received a red card for kicking Vancouver's Kendall Waston. Mansally must also sit out next weekend's league game against Portland.

Goalkeeper Rimando, who played in Tuesday's 1-0 win in Guatemala, stayed home to rest, along with usual starters Javier Morales, Joao Plata, Kyle Beckerman and Tony Beltran. Cassar said Rimando, who has been battling knee soreness, could play Wednesday in the U.S. Open semifinal game against Kansas City. —
