Orem • Derek Amicone has been named an assistant baseball coach at Utah Valley, the school announced Wednesday.

According to head coach Eric Madsen, Amicone was a volunteer assistant last season, when his duties included overseeing camps and working with infielders. He will now become involved in recruiting as well.

Amicone played at UVU for Madsen for three seasons prior to beginning his coaching career. He replaces Cooper Fouts, who went to Pepperdine University as an assistant coach.

"Derek has worked hard and diligently and has earned this opportunity," Madsen said. "He comes from a great baseball family and has a bright future in coaching. We're pleased to be able to promote from within and expand his role in the program."

Prior to returning to Utah Valley, Amicone was an administrative assistant at the University of Oregon for the 2014 season.

Amicone graduated from the University of Utah in 2013. He comes from an athletic family. His mother, Mary Kay, is the head softball coach at Weber State University. His dad is the general manager for the Salt Lake Bees. His brother, Trevor, is the head baseball coach at Woods Cross High School.
