The way Jon Dollahite of Mountain View sometimes ranges far to his left to use his forehand, instead of a backhand, isn't exactly a hundred percent textbook.

But if you had a forehand like Dollahite's, you'd probably do the same thing, too.

It's hard to argue with success, and Dollahite added to his own by beating Paul Monson of Timpview 6-2, 6-2 for the Class 4A singles championship.

On Saturday, after the state boys' tennis tournament was moved midday from Liberty Park to the Eccles Center at the University of Utah, Dollahite used a big serve and every imaginable shot from his forehand to capture his third straight singles title.

"He's just got a huge serve that's really hard to return and his forehand is just a massive weapon. It's hard to find his backhand," Monson said. "I play against guys from BYU all the time and he's got a better serve and forehand than all of them."

Dollahite often showed great touch on his forehand as well in the finals, hitting effective drop shots just over the net. If Monson got to the ball, Dollahite would frequently whip a passing shot by his opponent.

That part of his game, according to the Mountain View junior, is one he doesn't utilize all that much.

"Today, with Paul's game, I had to change things around a little bit," Dollahite said. "He's very crafty. The drop-and-pass or the drop-and-lob, that was the plan."

Though on the losing end of the 1st singles draw, Monson was part of a dominant showing by Timpview in the 4A tourney.

The Thunderbirds' duo of Travis Wardrop and Mason Brockbank stopped Maple Mountain's Nam Luu and Daniel Blonquist in the 1st doubles finale 6-4, 6-3.

Monson said that the plan earlier this season was to have him play doubles — which may have been a common strategy for players leery of running into Dollahite in the singles draw.

Asked how many in 4A doubles were trying to avoid Dollahite in singles, Monson simply answered, "multiple."

Timpview also won 2nd and 3rd singles, with Zach Simpson and Scotty Winn while the team of Nate Austin and Skyler Johnson took 2nd doubles for the T-birds.

"I knew Jonathan was huge block and I wanted to win a state title my senior year, but I knew for our team to win I had to play first singles," Monson said. "That was the best lineup for our team." —
