Provo • Davis used superior depth to capture a resounding Class 5A boys' track and field championship Saturday at rainy Clarence Robison Track at BYU.

Pole vaulter Matt Calvin, sprinter Ty Hands and 800-meter runner Logan McKay captured individual titles as the Darts won their third state title in four years.

It turned out to be a miserable and cold end to the high school track season as hundreds of fans huddled under umbrellas watching their athletes run on a wet track and throw and jump on a soggy field.

Orem showed good depth as it captured the 4A championship. The Golden Tigers saw Junior Tovar win the 100, Tregan Deveraux take the high jump gold, Kody Codner earn the 300 hurdles crown and the team captured the 4x100 relay.

Sophomore Jaiden Melendrez was one of many stars for Desert Hills, which easily defended its 3A team title.

Melendrez captured the 3,200 meters Saturday to go with his 1,600 title Friday.

"I was racing for place and not time, trying to pull my teammates through," said Melendrez, who credited his coaches with helping him get to the podium. "The last lap, I gave it all that I had."

Caleb Whitney swept the hurdles and Chandler Swaney won the high jump to help Desert Hills to its second straight boys team title.

Jonathan Rothschild captured the 3,200 meter title as North Summit used superior depth to win the 2A boys championship.

Panguitch successfully defended its 1A title.

Herriman senior Andre James, who is headed to UCLA to play football, was also a double winner. He took the discus and the shot put titles.

"In the discus, taking first was important for myself and my team," he said.

In Class 4A, Sky View's Connor Mantz finished up a fine distance running career by winning the 3,200 meters over Wasatch's Josh Collins. Collins upset Mantz Friday in the 1,600.

American Fork sophomores Casey Clinger and McKay Johnson added a one-two sweep in the 3,200 meters to go with their 1,600 sweep Friday.

Manti's Trevor Alder swept first place in both 2A boys hurdles events.

Milford's Ethan Young turned in one of the best performances in boys' 1A by winning the 3,200 and 800-meter titles Saturday to go with his 1,600 gold Friday.

South Summit's Isaac Tillett swept the 2A sprints, winning the 100, 200 and 400 meter races. —
