Kristen Carney led St. Joseph to a 12-point victory over defending champion Milford on Monday and helped the Jays to the Class 1A girls' golf championship at the St. George Golf Club.

The sponsoring Utah PGA utilizes a modified Stableford scoring system to determine team championships in Utah golf.

Carney fired a 90 to beat Duchesne's Krystal Chuygg by one stroke. Intermountain Christian's Jessica Emfinger was third with a 93, followed by St. Joseph's Mady White and Amanda Higgs, who fired 94.

This was St. Joseph's second state girls' golf title in three years.

Milford finished second in the team standings, followed by Manila, Dugway and Pinnacle.

After one day, the battle for the 1A boys' championship and medalist honor looks close.

Piute leads Green River by seven strokes with Valley, defending champion Rich and Bryce Valley all in the hunt.

Jens Brewer of Monticello fired a 75 to lead Valley's Cobe Reck by four shots going into Tuesday's final day of play at the St. George Golf Club. Green River's Chance Pfander shot an 80, Rich's Nick Jarman an 81 and defending champion Garreth Mayer of Milford an 82.

The 1A boys' tournament will conclude at the St. George Golf Club on Tuesday, where the one-day 2A girls' event will also be held.

Defending 4A champion Provo appears poised to win another title Tuesday in the second day of the Class 4A girls' golf tournament, which is being held at Brigham City's Eagle Mountain course.

The Bulldogs hold a 305-282 lead over Bountiful while Box Elder and Orem are tied for third at 275 and Corner Canyon is in fifth at 274.

Provo's Naomi Soifua, last year's medalist, fired a 67 Monday in the first of the two-day tournament to hold an eight-shot lead over Springville's Lydia Austin.

Xena Motes of Ogden was third at 77, followed by Bountiful's Karen Volcarce and Box Elder's Kendra Craynor who were tied for fourth at 78.

The Class 4A girls' tournament concludes Tuesday at Eagle Mountain in Brigham City, with leaders going out around 10:30 a.m.
