Fort Worth, Texas • A rare mistake by a near-perfect gymnast cost Utah's Georgia Dabritz a chance to claim a little piece of history.

But even in disappointment, she showed the mark of a champion.

Dabritz, Utah's senior who won the Pac-12 and NCAA regional all-around titles, fell out of the running for the NCAA all-around title early here at the national competition when she fell off the balance beam.

Dabritz scored just 9.325 thanks to the fall, eliminating her from the all-around competition on Utah's first event. The fall was just the second on the event for Dabritz this season and ended a streak of four meets in which she scored 9.8 or higher on the event.

Hopes were high that Dabritz might become Utah's first all-around champion since Theresa Kulikowski won the title in 1999, but the anticipation and drama of such a feat was over literally minutes after the competition started.

The miscue prevents Dabritz from winning every major award in her collegiate career. Prior to the start of the NCAAs, she was named the AAI Gymnast of the Year, which goes to the top senior gymnast as voted by the coaches.

She was also named the Pac-12 Gymnast of the Year and Pac-12 Scholar-Athlete of the Year this season.

Dabritz was visibly disappointed in her mistake, shaking her head and mumbling to herself after the event. However, she battled back to score 9.9 on the vault, 9.925 on the floor and a 10.0 on the uneven bars.

"I have no clue what happened," said Dabritz of her beam mistake. "I was going through my cues like normal and the next thing I was on the ground. I was really upset with myself, but I knew I had to change my attitude real quick for the team."

She did just that, as her floor and uneven bar scores were team highs and good enough to qualify her for Sunday's individual finals, and her vault score was second only to Kari Lee's 9.95.

Her 10.0 was the first awarded during these NCAA Championships and the sixth of her career on the event.

"I know I'm not the most consistent gymnast out there, but one thing I've tried to work hard on is being a good comeback gymnast, and I think I did that tonight," Dabritz said. "I'm proud of the way I came back."

So too was Utah co-coach Megan Marsden.

"I know Georgia has been a vocal leader, and I told her I've been in her shoes," Marsden said. "Sometimes when you are so focused on the team, once in a while you forget to take care of yourself and you have to come roaring back. That is what she did."
