Utah State softball coach Steve Johnson received some job security on Thursday as athletic director Scott Barnes awarded him with a contract extension through the 2019 season.

USU is 11-22 with a 3-3 record in the Mountain West.

Last year, in his first season, Johnson coached the Aggies to an 18-37 record, the most wins by an Aggie team since 2010. USU went 6-18 in conference play.

"Steve is building a foundation that gives our softball program an opportunity to sustain success," Barnes said. "It takes time to build a softball program, and after one season, Steve's vision and leadership has put us ahead of schedule in many aspects. We are delighted that he has committed to Utah State long-term."

The Aggies return to the field this weekend, hosting UNLV in a three-game series that begins today at 3 p.m. The teams will play at 3 p.m. on Friday and noon on Saturday.
