Utah gymnast Tory Wilson's season ended in a brief instant Saturday night when she tore her Achilles tendon taking off on her first floor pass during the Pac-12 Championships.

Unfortunately, the road to recovery will be much longer for the senior.

Wilson, who won the Pac-12 vault title with a 10 and was in second in the all-around competition at the time of the injury, not only tore the tendon in her right heel, but also dislocated metatarsals in her left foot when she landed short.

Both injuries will require surgery on Monday, and Wilson may not be able to bear weight on either foot for at least eight weeks.

Utah coach Greg Marsden said on Sunday he was still having trouble getting excited about Utah's Pac-12 win because he is so concerned with Wilson.

"It's going to be a lot for her to get through," he said. "She is set to graduate in May, but this is going to be a long procedure."

True to her nature, Wilson is keeping her spirits up, Marsden said.

"Tory always has a smile on her face and is so positive, even last night back in the training room she was cracking jokes," Marsden said. "She is just a great kid, and it's hard to see her go through this."

Marsden has seen plenty of injuries during his 40 years as the Utes' head coach, but admits the injury to Wilson hit him and the team hard.

She is the third Utah gymnast to tear her Achilles, with senior Corrie Lothrop suffering the same injury in 2013 and junior Kassandra Lopez tearing her Achilles last season.

Both of those gymnasts suffered their injuries during warm-ups.

"I'm not trying to minimize by any means what those two went through, any serious injuries are tough," he said. "But it was hard for me to focus on the championship last night at all because I was so involved with Tory. I don't know if it was the timing of the injury and the circumstances or that the other two got to come back and compete and she doesn't, but it is a tough, tough deal."

Until Wilson's injury, Saturday's effort was a dream meet for the Utes as they won their second Pac-12 title with a 198.15, finishing well ahead of second-place UCLA which posted a 197.35.

Wilson also scored a 9.9 on the uneven bars and a 9.875 on the balance beam, finishing fifth and sixth on those events.

She ends her career as a five-time All-American, the 2014 Pac-12 all-around champion and Gymnast of the Year and two-time Utah co-MVP. Wilson also won the 2013 NCAA Regional vault title. Her 10 on Saturday in the vault was the third of her career.

The Utes will find out Monday where they will compete in the NCAA Regionals on April 4.

"I told the team we can feel bad for a couple of days, but then we have to pick up the pieces and roll up our sleeves and get back to work," Marsden said.
